To qualify for the bonus points, the club need only demonstrate a bona fide effort to alert
the media to the club's participation in Field Day. Here's the actual rule:
7.3.2. Media Publicity: 100 bonus points may be earned for attempting to obtain publicity
from the local media. A copy of the press release, or a copy of the actual media publicity
received (newspaper article, etc) must be submitted to claim the points.
The principal print media outlet is, of course, the Springfield Union-News/Sunday
Republican, [email protected]; 788-1200; fax 788-1301. As a former newspaper writer, I
would suggest keeping the announcement brief and to the point. This is not front-page news.
Aim for something on the order of 200 words tops. Send a copy of the release to the TV
stations too (WWLP, Channel 22 and WGGB, Channel 40), since one or both might be willing to
come to the site--if it's a slow news weekend, we might get lucky. Offhand, I'm not sure
I'd waste my time with radio outlets, although if any still invite "community calendar"
listings, you could word up something on the order of 25 words or less.
Remember the basic who, what, when, where (a map or directions for TV crews is nice) and
why. I've edited and attached an MS-Word file of the sample release that's in our ARRL
Field Day packet (the original contained errors and is not the most gracefully written
document, unfortunately). It might be worth pointing out that this is the first Field Day
where all of North and South America and the Caribbean will be participating.
If I can help, please ping me. News writing is what I do for a living.
