RECORD REPORT

National Weather Service Taunton MA
345 PM EDT Mon Aug 19 2002
Blue Hill Observatory sets all time record long heat wave
The heat wave that has affected Southern New England this month was also
setting records at the Blue Hill observatory in Milton, Massachusetts,
located about 10 miles southwest of Boston.
Previously, the longest heat wave in their 117 period of record, was 8
days
from August 10-17 back in 1944. That record was broken today, as the
temperature Rose to 90 degrees this afternoon. The 90 plus degree heat
which
began 11 August has continued unabated for 9 straight days, making this
the
longest heatwave in the stations history, a station that is considered
the
longest running geographically homogeneous climate record in North
America.
During the heat wave, the station broke 2 records for daytime high
temperature on 14 and 18 August with temperatures of 99 and 93 degrees
respectively, and one record high was equaled on 13 August when the
temperature hit 98. The station also set records for the warmest low
temperature on the 13th (72), 17th (72) and 18th of August (75).
Fortunately, today is the end of this current spell of record heat.
