Icom IC-28H, 2m 45 watt, with DTMF mike, beatup manual, power cord, mounting bracket, and a 12.5amp P/S for $60. This is an older radio and has numerous scuff marks on the covers but works 100%. 2. Icom IC-228A, 2m 25 watt, with DTMF mike, manual, service manual, power cord, and mounting bracket for $45. This is a newer radio and is in excellent condition. 3. Icom IC-207H, 2m/70cm dual band with everything that came in the box, including the box for $145. This radio is pristine and has been used very little. It has a fan that is louder than most. These would be good starter radios for our newer club members. Also available is a US Tower TX-438, a 38' crandup tower with a tilt-over base for $1500 (todays list price is over $5000. The tower appears to be in good shape but needs the thrust bearing and a hinge pin. Please let me know if you have any interest in these items. I can be reached by phone at 830-343-3366 or by e-mail at kk5ia at swbell.net or see me at the meeting on Thursday where I will have the radios for inspection (but not the tower). The trailer group is a car trailer with a 15'x5' utility trailer on top of the car trailer and another smaller utility trailer on top of the larger utility trailer. There are yard tools and other misc. stuff in both utility trailers. Underneath the large utility trailer are my Ham Radio towers & poles. They are being brought here from central California by a flatbed truck. I need to locate a loading dock where the dock is at ground level and the flatbed backs down into an indention where we can unload the three units. Once unloaded, I will need a large tractor with forks on the front or a large fork lift to unstack the three trailers. The truck is leaving central California next Tuesday, May 9th. I don't know yet what day he will get here. If you can help me find a loading dock and a tractor/fork lift, please let me know as soon as you can so I can make arrangements. I?d like to thank Frank Edwards for chairing it and members John Canfield, Larry Altman, Lew King, Warren Setnan, Jerry Migely and Gary Johnson. Here?s an update regarding the upcoming Field Day CW station. John Canfield has committed his Kenwood TS-590S for the CW station. It has several features including a roofing filter with DSP filtering. This is a great enhancement for CW operation. Jerry Migely is providing his computer/ rig interface to facilitate CW keying from N1MM. The station will be set up with the following options: 1. Keying from N1MM macros. 2. Keying from an external Heathkit keyer/ paddle combination. 3. Bring your own paddle and key utilizing the internal TS-590S keyer. (1/4? 3 conductor plug Tip?Dot then Dash then Ground wiring). From a scoring standpoint, CW and Digital contacts are worth two points and SSB 1 point per contact. Understand the Digital Station will utilize the Hex Beam. So, the purpose of this email is to determine the level of interest by club members to operate either the CW station or SSB station. Lew King has expressed his interest in operating CW. If, as a club, we have serious interest in operating CW then it follows we would like to have a directional antenna. However, if there is little CW interest and most of the members want to operate SSB then we either need to have another directional antenna for CW or give the SSB station priority with the directional antenna and accept a non-directional antenna for CW. I?m not an official member of the Field Day Committee, just trying to sort out what is best for the club taking into account CW operators. If you can provide feedback as to your interest in operating CW or SSB it will be much appreciated. Larry Altman has been tasked with scheduling operators and he can utilize the information as well. So do you want to operate SSB, CW or both. Appreciate your feedback. I?m building a full wave loop for 30 meters and planning a center resonant frequency of 10.125 Mhz. In order to match this antenna to a 50 ohm coax I?m building a 1/4 wave 75 ohm series matching transformer. I have a PL-259 connector on one end of the 75 ohm cable and a 100 ohm composite resistor (Per the Design) on the terminating antenna end. I need to attach the transformer to an MFJ-259B or later version and adjust the frequency until the reactance reads 0, which is the resonant point of the line transforming the 100 ohm load to 50 ohms. I?ve cut the 75 ohm transformer cable long and need to trim the length until I have no reactance at 10.125 Mhz. So, I can either borrow the Analyzer and return it or just bring the cable and my tools to trim the cable to length at your place. Appreciate the help. He used straight text in the body of the email/submission. I am working with John now to find the reason why some of his messages post, while others do not. But thanks to AC4CA John and K5WRO Ray and Harvey K5HV, I think I now have it right. Or maybe I should say we'll see after I push :GO"! No test this time!! You may have seen this before, so please excuse the bandwidth: As I reported to the HCARC club members at the May 4th meeting, I am in the process of moving to Cedar Park, Texas. I will not be living where I can erect towers and/or antennas, so I am selling off much of my equipment. In determining how to proceed, I've decided to conduct garage sales at my home two or three afternoons a week for a yet to be determined period of time. I will publish the dates and times of these sales here on the HCARC reflector. Since what I am selling is so diversified, I do not want to take the time it will take to price mark so many items. So I've also decided to ask potential purchasers to "make me an offer I can't refuse!". Maybe we can even have a little fun negotiating, which I've regularly seen many hams do very well at flea markets! There will also be items that can be negotiated for a price of "FREE". I am planning on holding my first sales on Thursday May 25 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, and again on Saturday May 27 from 2:00 PM to 5 PM. Hope to see you then. 73 K5XA John Guida From galeheise at windstream.net Tue May 23 14:14:24 2017 From: galeheise at windstream.net (galeheise at windstream.net) Date: Tue, 23 May 2017 13:14:24 -0500 Subject: [HCARC] Digital Modes During Poor Propagation Message-ID: <822627FFCEEE4AB1BFBABD75DA4411E7@GalePC> To All- This may not be interesting to everyone so I?ll keep it short and invite those interested in the subject to contact me directly for more information and a demonstration at my QTH. I?ve been off the air for sometime (Previous contest participation was two years ago) and in the process of getting back on the air I?ve been very disappointed in the higher frequency bands. So, considering this fact I decided to put up two 30 meter antennas, a full wave loop and a vertical. While this increased the number of functional bands the level of activity still wasn?t what I was searching. The HCARC May program on digital communications set me on a path reviewing low signal level digital modes. I ended up interested in JT65 which is likely old news to old timers in the club but for those of you who are not familiar with it, you might want to consider this mode. The website K0PIR.us is an excellent resource of information on this subject. I?m already running Ham Radio Deluxe rig control and logging. Two programs that integrate with Ham Radio Deluxe are WSJT-X for JT65 operation and JTAlert for automatic logging into the HRD Logbook. JTAllert also integrates with a number of logging programs. After installing and setting up the software packages (K0PIR has a number of youtube posts showing how to do this) I gave this mode a try. Fortunately have antennas for 10 through 80 meters and was surprised to find so much JT65 activity on various bands. In fact I was tuning across 10 meters and thought the band was dead until coming to 28.076 MHz. This level of activity may be in part because JT65 is an official mode of operation recognized by ARRL for awards. So, the upside to the effort, that was quite minimal, is one can find plenty of stations to work nearly any hour of the day. In addition, when it appears bands are dead activity may be found on JT65. Since this may be an old topic for many in the club, if you are interested, please contact me directly for information and/ or a demonstration. Please advise if you plan to attend or need directions to 38 Indian Springs Drive. In addition, for those having little exposure of how computers may function with Ham Radio, the subject has been broadened. The intention is not to go into a lot of detail but provide an insight of how computers may be utilized with Ham Radio. If there?s particular interest to learn more in specific areas they may be addressed at a later date. While this is old information for seasoned hams, it maybe helpful for those who have never delved into the area of computers and Ham Radio. The following list is a general outline of information that will be highlighted. It?ll be adjusted depending upon the interest and level of knowledge for those attending. A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF COMPUTERS AND HAM RADIO 1. Computer logging. 2. Logbook of the World (LoTW) 3. USB to Serial Interfaces. 4. Direct CW and FSK keying for CW and RTTY operations respectively with a computer keyboard. 5. Computer decoding of CW and RTTY signals/ MMTTY for RTTY. 5. Computer Aided Transceiver (CAT). 6. N1MM Logging Software. 7. SignaLink computer to rig interface and AFSK keying. 8. Ham Radio Deluxe rig control, DM780 and logging. 9. PSK31. 10. WSJT-X and JTAlert for JT65.
