We are setting up the station at my QTH to minimize last minute glitches. There are a couple of additional items that will improve operating. We would like to set up rig control so that N1MM with automatically switch bands following the band switch on the radio. This will prevent an accidental mismatch of logging if one forgets to manually switch bands on N1MM when the band on the radio is changed. This will require an additional RS-232 cable or adapter. The computer only has two USB outlets and we need three in order to add a keyboard for more convenient typing (one for rig control, one for the CW keying device, one for the keyboard). So we need two items and would like to know if anyone in the club will loan them to us. 1. Either a 9-pin female to female RS-232 cable or a 9-pin female to female RS-232 adapter (we have a female to male RS-232 cable). 2. A two position or greater USB hub. Appreciate your help. 73s Gale KM4DR From tower2 at stx.rr.com Sat Jun 17 12:45:31 2017 From: tower2 at stx.rr.com (Harvey N. John Canfield is loaning his Kenwood TS-590S to the club CW station this year. It has great filtering. John is also bringing his power supply and manual for the TS-590S. Frank Edwards is loaning his Dell 4-USB port computer, a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse. Jerry Migely is preparing the computer for N1MM and networking. He is also loaning an RS-232 to CW keying device that he built himself. I?m loaning a couple of USB to Serial converters, cables, and a Heath electronic keyer with paddle. Lew King, Frank Edwards and I were able to configure devices and assemble the station at my QTH along with the club tuner. It was great being able to familiarize ourselves with a new rig prior to Field Day. Lew King has been practicing with Morse Runner. We spent a couple of hours in a mock contest using N1MM and Lew did amazingly well. As mentioned at the club meeting, we have attempted to assemble a station with the greatest amount of flexibility. Here are some setups: 1. A single person can utilize the function keys in N1MM to log and send CW from the wireless keyboard via the computer. 2. A single person can log and send CW with either the paddle on the electronic keyer or bring their own paddle to utilize the internal TS-590S keyer. 3. A team can operate with one person logging and the other operating the choice method of sending with his own paddle or external keyer. It would be nice to have a ? ? male to two ?? female adapter to allow tandem copying with headphones. This was discussed in the meeting but not sure if anyone located adapters or not. Anyway, just want to say thank you to everyone working to put together Field Day. Whether you are new to CW or a long time operator you are welcome to participate since we want people to have fun. Based upon our recent experience Lew suggested we switch out operators about every hour on the CW station so we will be looking for people to operate. Don?t be shy about wanting to operate no matter what your speed. 73s Gale KM4DR From kk5ia at swbell.net Thu Jun 22 22:00:52 2017 From: kk5ia at swbell.net (Frank Edwards) Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2017 21:00:52 -0500 Subject: [HCARC] HCARC Field Day Message-ID: Greetings to all HCARC members and interested friends, Field Day is almost here. The annual emergency preparedness exercise starts this Saturday at 1:00PM local time and continues to Sunday at 1:00PM local time. The objective is to contact as many stations during the field day period of 24 hours. The HCARC will be operating at the Our Lady of the Hills athletic complex just off Highway 27 and west of the Kerrville airport on Peterson Farm Road where there is a blinking yellow light. All club members and their friends are invited to attend. There will be an evening supper of chicken fajitas with the usual condiments starting at 6:00PM. The Field Day crew will start setting up for Field Day on Friday at 1:00PM and we have planned a dutch lunch at Bumdoodlers (on Highway 27 in Kerrville) at 11:00AM for a final discussion/assessment. Come join us if you wish to help with the setup of the site. If you plan on attending our Field Day feel free to bring your radio and try it out on the fine array of antennas the Field Day crew is planning on putting up. See how it performs on the various types of antennas or use some of the club radios available at the site. If you do NOT plan on attending, please help the club score as many points as possible by contacting the Field Day crew on as many frequencies as possible as we receive points for every valid contact. Most of you have at least a 2 meter radio so try to contact us on 146.55 simplex (no offset or pl tone required). If you also have 70CM, try us on 446.500 simplex. If you happen to have a 220 radio, try us on 223.5 simplex. We will also try to monitor the HCARC repeater (146.98 PL 162.2) during field day. We can't get points for a repeater contact, but we can visit and tell you where on the HF bands we are currently listening. We can get points for each of the bands and modes. For example, you could contact us on 40m SSB for a point, as well as 40m CW/digital for 2 points and that is true for most of the HF bands (except the WARC bands). Note that if you work at the Field Day station for points, you cannot contact us for points from your home station. Please look up the Field Day rules at the ARRL site and any information on the exchange and how to classify your station. Come join us and bring your interested friends. 73 de kk5ia Frank
