CQ CQ,
Greetings to all here in the South Texas Section. I have not written
for a while and want to catch everyone up on various activities and
actions within the Section. We are full swing into the Hamfest season
although commitments meant I have not been able to make several that I
normally do.
I was able to make it Shertz and Orange this year and both of them were
great events and had good turnouts. As usual the Friday night BBQ in
Orange was up to its typical great standards. Sadly I missed the
Section Convention in Rosenberg this year but have been told it too was
a great event. I have heard rumors that some changes are coming to it
next year and it should be even better.
Looking ahead, of course is the Dayton Hamvention and then Hamcom up in
Irving. Both great events. Then we will start to wrap up the year with
the Austin Summerfest. While unable to make Dayton, I hope to see many
of you in Irving and Austin this year.
West Gulf Division Communications Task Forces
As I stated in an article last year in the West Gulf Division
newsletter, there were concerns that the WGD Rapid Response Teams,
formed several years ago to support the States Rapid Response Task
Forces, was showing signs of neglect with some of our key leadership
having retired and started travelling and seeing the world. Dr.
Woolweaver and I discussed at length and came up with a plan of action
to reenergize the teams and ensure they are ready to respond if this
should be the year that the major storms, or other disaster events,
return.
I am pleased to announce that a new leadership team has been formed and
are working to grow the strength and participation on the teams. We
currently plan on Four teams -same as previously – with a Dallas
Team, an Austin Team, a San Antonio Team and a West Texas Team. They
also have a new name: West Gulf Division Communications Task Forces.
Dr. Woolweaver has appointed WGD Assistant Director Dave Martin, K5YFO
to lead this effort. Joining the team to assist with logistics,
Operation and Training are John Galvin, N5TIM and Scott Hamende, KD5JX.
They have gotten off to a running start and I want to thank them much.
Interested in participating? Please reach out to any of them for details
and thank them for taking this important assignment on.
New Section Assistant Manager for Education
I would also like to welcome to the Section, Tommy Gober N5DUX as our
new Assistant Manager for Education. Tommy has been serving this role
in the North Texas Section for several years and has recently moved to
Galveston. If you are interested in developing more education
initiatives between your group and the local school systems, either in
seeking scholarship opportunities, informing your school administrators
and teachers of free training offered by the league or simply discussing
the benefits of adding Amateur Radio to the school curriculum, reach out
to Tommy. If he cannot help, he will know who might be able to. We have
several success stories in the Section, such as the Student club at LBJ
High School in Austin who has won awards during School on-the-air
contests. N5DUX at arrl.net
Btw, The ARRL ARISS program is always looking for new schools to
schedule on-the-air contacts with the International Space Station. If
you think your local school would be interested let us know and we will
discuss the process.
Scouting Activity Increasing
Much thanks to our Assistant Manager for Scouting Les Mignerey KB0MEF
who has been working closely with the various scouting councils to grow
the relationship and encourage more ham radio activates amongst the
Scouting organization. There are several events being planned in the
Houston area as I type this.
Les would love to work to keep this momentum going and is seeking hams
across the section that would like to work with him as Assistants
Scouting Coordinators that would focus on your area. Needless to say,
he will welcome any assistance with the ongoing events in the Houston
area. KB0MEF at arrl.net
Texas Division of Emergency Management Conference
There are several events coming up, COMEX’s , FEMA Conferences and
the Annual Division of Emergency Management Conference in May. As is
usual, we will have a booth setup and a local response trailer from SA
ARES group also on display. There are several great presentations, of
which we will be one on Friday morning the 19th. Volunteer admission
rates are just $35.
In closing, I would like to recognize and congratulate the Williamson
County ARES group for having recently completed a multi-day training
event where they supported local Emcom officials by practicing
providing communication to support 911 dispatch functions in the event
of a loss of normal 800 mhz trunked operations. The event was so
successful that they were asked to activate and be on standby during a
recent Motorola cutover of 911 consoles and were onsite and ready to
support throughout the change over. Great Work team! This shows what
ARES and the ongoing training efforts are all about.
