My wind instruments are sited very well - about 26' off the ground on my shop roof and totally in the clear so that's a fairly accurate wind assessment. We got lucky with no hail and the usual 25-30 winds. I looked at yesterday's radar loop (Weather Underground) and we had a large bright red splotch go directly over us but the bright pink (greater intensity return) was just a little south of us thankfully. Unfortunately I don't know what our peak rain rate was since we stopped uploading last night due to no Internet, but it must have been a rain dump! (There's a script in a cron job on my weather server that's supposed to backfill the missing data on Weather Underground every day at 0000 hours so hope that works.) The following was in todays news: Season Approaches: U.S. Hits Record 127 Months Since Major Hurricane Strike By Barbara Hollingsworth | May 24, 2016 | 9:25 AM EDT Wilma, the last major hurricane to make landfall in U.S., roars into Florida on Oct. 24, 2005. (AP photo) (CNSNews.com) ? With hurricane season set to start next week, Tuesday marks a record 127 months since a major hurricane has made landfall in the continental United States, according to statistics compiled by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration?s (NOAA) Hurricane Research Division, which keeps data on all the hurricanes that have struck the U.S. since 1851. The last major hurricane (defined as a Category 3 or above) to hit the U.S. mainland was Hurricane Wilma, which made landfall in Florida on Oct. 24, 2005. Although a major hurricane typically strikes the U.S. about once every two years, no major hurricanes have made landfall in the U.S. for more than 10 and a half years. The second longest stretch between major hurricane strikes was between the major hurricane that struck in August 1860 and the one that struck in September 1869, NOAA records show. The third longest stretch was between the major hurricane that struck in September 1900 and the one that struck in October 1906. Wilma was one of four major hurricanes ? including Hurricanes Dennis (July 10, 2005), Katrina (Aug. 29, 2005) and Rita (Sept. 24, 2005) - that came ashore in the U.S. during the 2005 hurricane season. (The season starts on June 1 and runs through November 30.) Hurricanes Wilma, Rita and Katrina killed almost 4,000 people and caused an estimated $160 billion in damage that year, making it ?one of the most active hurricane seasons in recorded history,? NOAA said in a statement marking the 10-year anniversary of the 2005 hurricane season. Because of the massive death and destruction caused by Wilma, Rita, Katrina and Dennis, their names have been retired by the National Weather Service. ?On average, 12 tropical storms, 6 of which become hurricanes, form over the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, or Gulf of Mexico during the hurricane season,? according to NOAA. ?Over a typical 2-year period, the U.S. coastline is struck by an average of 3 hurricanes, 1 of which is classified as a major hurricane (winds of 111 mph or greater)? on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Such storms are capable of causing ?devastating? or ?catastrophic? damage. The current drought in major hurricane activity is a ?rare event? that occurs only once every 177 years, according to a study published last year by researchers at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) entitled The Frequency and Duration of U.S. Hurricane Droughts. NOAA?s official ?2016 hurricane season outlook will be issued on May 27th,? Dr. Gerry Bell, hurricane climate specialist at the agency?s Climate Prediction Center, told CNSNews.com. However, there is a chance the 127-month record will be broken this year with the decline of the 2015-2016 El Nino, a warming of the ocean surface, that was one of the three strongest on record. There is a 75 percent chance of a transition to La Nina, a cooling of the ocean surface, by this fall, according to NOAA. Dr. Philip Klotzbach, a meteorologist and hurricane specialist at the University of Colorado, tweeted that based on data going back to 1878, major hurricane activity is more likely to happen during the La Ninas that follow El Ninos. According to The Weather Channel, last winter?s El Nino ?played a significant suppressing role in the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season?. The odds may shift a bit toward a more active Atlantic hurricane season in 2016, but El Nino?s absence doesn?t guarantee that outcome.? An analysis of five hurricane seasons following strong El Ninos found that the number of Category 3 or above hurricanes ranged from one (1973,1983) to five (1958). In a statement on its website last year, NOAA expressed concern that the ?unprecedented stretch? between major hurricanes could induce Americans living in coastal areas to suffer from ?hurricane amnesia? and not be adequately prepared for the next hurricane strike. ?It only takes one storm to change your life and community,? warned a NOAA website for this month?s Hurricane Preparedness Week, which lists seven steps ?to prepare for a potential landfalling tropical storm or hurricane? accompanied by storm surges and heavy rainfall. ?Storm surge is the abnormal rise of water generated by a storm?s winds. This hazard is historically the leading cause of hurricane related deaths in the United States,? according to NOAA. ?Flooding from heavy rains is the second leading cause of fatalities during landfalling tropical cyclones.? President Obama, so far, is the only president since Benjamin Harrison not to have a major hurricane make landfall in the U.S. during his term. Harrison, whose term of office did not include a major hurricane strike, served from 1889 to 1893 Gary J N5BAA From kd5wdq at gmail.com Thu May 26 16:40:53 2016 From: kd5wdq at gmail.com (kd5wdq .) Understand what it is and how you can protect yourself. By: Navy Federal on April 25, 2016 A A The word might sound funny to say, but make no mistake, SMiShing is no joke. Known as the little sister of phishing, SMiShing is another cybercrime meant to dupe you into revealing your personal information, such as passwords or credit card numbers, which criminals then use to steal your money or your identity. SMiShing, short for "short message service" phishing, is on the FBI?s Internet Crime Complaint Center list for cybercrimes to watch out for. A relatively new form of cyberfraud, SMiShing usually appears as a text message from your financial institution or credit card provider alerting you that your account has been compromised and encouraging you to take immediate action. For example, you might receive a text message that requests you to click on a link to receive an important message from your financial institution regarding unauthorized charges to your account. The message might also ask you to call a phone number to discuss a problem with your account. Whatever the request, the result will be the same. Cybercriminals will use the information to commit fraud, either by getting you to type in your account information or by installing malware or keyloggers that will extract your personal information without your knowledge. "Many Americans are aware of the scams that target emails or websites," says Becky Loggins, Manager of Fraud Communication Strategy. "However, there?s often a false sense of security when it comes to text messages, simply because people aren?t used to hearing about text message fraud and tend to trust that a message originates from a legitimate source." You can protect yourself against SMiShing by being wary of any unsolicited text messages you receive and taking the following precautions. a.. Avoid clicking on links in text messages. Links are often used to install malware or keyloggers?software that tracks your keystrokes. b.. Never respond to a suspicious text message. If you receive a text message related to finances that isn?t from your financial institution, don?t respond. Like website links, text responses can be used to verify your phone number and gain access to your personal information. Some financial institutions, like Navy Federal, will use text messages* to verify suspicious purchases, but those texts will never request personal information. Check with your financial institution to see if it offers SMS text banking or mobile alerts so you know how to tell the difference between a legitimate message and a fake. c.. Always be on alert for any text that looks suspicious. Contact your cellphone service provider to report the incident and block future texts from that number. Navy Federal will never reach out to members asking for personal information via a text message. You can rest assured, if you do fall victim to credit card fraud or identity theft, Navy Federal has the resources to help you recover. An unknown hacker or crime ring with sophisticated computer skills is sending out emails that are catching the attention of Microsoft Word users and Amazon shoppers. These emails are so convincing, people all across the country are falling for these attacks that are installing ransomware on their computers. The short story is this: Do not open any email and click on any attachments that looks like it is from Amazon until you completely read this alert. Here's what you need to know: This attack starts with one Amazon email. It's bogus but looks totally real. The sender's email address is: Auto-shipping at amazon.com. Hackers could have changed this by now, so be on the lookout for any Amazon email, especially if it includes a Microsoft Word document inside. This ransomware is probably also being spread with JavaScript attachments. That document asks you to enable macros, which are little computer programs that automate basic computer tasks. Note: Microsoft warns you with this image (below) when you're being asked to enable macros. Never enable macros unless you created them yourself or you asked a trustworthy person to create them for you. This is scary. If you do enable the macros, your computer is infected with the Locky ransomware. That's the same ransomware used to encrypt computer files at major corporations, hospitals and more. In these attacks, you end up paying a lot more than ransom. But it only starts there. If you are victimized, your computer or certain folders and files will be frozen. The attackers encrypt them, meaning they securely lock your treasured photos and videos, financial records and important documents. It can only be unlocked if you have the encryption key. The hackers will return access only if you pay them a ransom. They'll send you to an anonymous web browser like Tor and demand to be paid in the untraceable digital currency known as bitcoin. In this Amazon attack, they're demanding you pay the equivalent of $227 to $454. The problem with these attacks is twofold. The obvious part is they take your money. The less-known part about a lot of ransomware attacks is that the attackers often destroy your files anyway. You may never get access to your own computer again. These attacks are serious. In fact, the FBI has warned all Americans that ransomware is so difficult to unlock that you may be better off paying the ransom and hoping the criminals give you access to your own computer. Don't be the next victim. Here's how to stay safe: 1.. Be on the lookout for these phishing email scam red flags. Keep your guard up; and 2.. Never enable macros, especially when they're sent to you by someone you don't know; and 3.. Amazon customers: Click here to report phishing scams (and read important safety tips from Amazon). If you can report it, they have a better chance of getting caught. 73, Gary J N5BAA From n5baa at hctc.net Sun May 29 17:55:07 2016 From: n5baa at hctc.net (Gary Johnson) Date: Sun, 29 May 2016 16:55:07 -0500 Subject: [HCARC] BIG RAIN In-Reply-To: References: <3A869FF4E5174E6A8154FA06E58625E6@GaryPC>, <9DCA1D7B-79A2-423F-98D9-E8A639F21747@gmail.com> Message-ID: <6E22A4320FA34780A5101CF0F6CB4595@GaryPC> Water at Verde Creek on Elm Pass Rd (also locally known as Frank KK5IA?s QTH) was over the bridge at some point last night. My 11 inch rain gauge overflowed so I am not totally accurate in my rainfall amount. There is 9 1/2 inches in a trash can and 9 3/4 inches in two 5 gallon buckets, so I will go with 9 5/8 inches. Not sure why the rain gauge overflowed, but come to think of it I might have forgotten to empty it the other day ? I was in a hurry. To put this in perspective @325,851 gallons per acre foot of water, on my 6.89 acres 1,690,000 gallons fell. AMAZING BUT TRUE. That is equal to the amount of water my neighbor and I pump through his well equaling 10 years water usage. So much rain fell about half way from Center Point to Kerrville off of Hwy 27 that it has completely filled one of the sand and gravel quarries. A new community lake. My guess is over 9 inches since a couple of new 32 gallon trash cans are about 40% filled with water. They have sloping sides, but it?s still a lot of water. Someone down stream has water in their house tonight. I'm very sad to tell all of you that on May 25 we lost Ruthie to the devastating cancer that she bravely battled for the past eight years. However, typical of Ruthie as I'm sure you will remember her, she stayed positive to the end. Throughout her last days, we were blessed by the presence of Ruthie's daughter from Connecticut, and our children and grandchildren who came to Kerrville to help with the care of their beloved Ruthie, and their Papa (proudly that's me!). And not at all a surprise, Ruthie maintained her love and concern for family and friends, as well as her unique sense of humor, to the very end. That was my Lady!!!! Due to a family medical issue, we are postponing Ruthie's memorial service until October 15. We'll make sure to send out a reminder notification to you in plenty of time for you to plan to attend if you would like to do so.. In closing, thank all of you for always being there for us, but especially for her. Ruthie loved all of you so much, as I do as well. God Bless all of you. John Guida
