Probably about 1960 or 61. Biggest difference was the last picture was incomplete as Ranger was just taking it and was in the process of transmitting it back to earth when it impacted the moon. Not much on board memory. The thought of a thousand photos in memory was incomprehensible back then. The SIDC site has sunspot drawings and often a short article on some aspect of solar activity. It is located in Belgium. The NASA site is where I get the 171 and 304 Angstrom images as well as the magnetic field image and the visible image. The images on this site are all from a satellite. Most of these spectral lines can't get through our atmosphere. The MLSO site is Muana Loa in HI. That is where I get the H-alpha images. I usually go to the GONG H-alpha area and that lets me see the latest images from whichever sites are currently seeing the sun. There are sites from Australia, HI, Spain, Chile, CA, etc. Almost always someone has a clear view of the sun. One choice is to see a "movie" of a period of time when events occurred. The Solar Soft site is Lockheed-Martin. The main thing I get hear is a list of recent flares although there is a lot of other interesting data here. The Solar Monitor site has a lot of images and other data that is from other sites. It is a different presentation of the data. A couple cautions - the sunspot plots are reversed relative to the images. I guess it is historical. The sunspot plot guys try to make their data compatible with the sunspot observations of a hundred or more years ago. They use small telescopes and don't use the magnetic field data to classify the groups. I don't use the sunspot plots much myself. Better data is available. You will see lots of mentions of CME's (Coronal Mass Ejections). Most of what gets ejected is protons. The solar wind is primarily protons and is hitting us all the time. There are about a thousand CME's a year on average. During periods of high solar activity there are more and during low periods there are less. Only a very small percentage actually hit the earth and of those most have very minor effects. a CME is nothing to really be concerned about. If you have any questions, send me an e-mail. I enjoyed talking to you all about the sun and propagation and perhaps we can have a follow on session if you would like. I have 5 gallon buckets of U-bolts, clamps, insulators, a pile of aluminum tubing, and a couple of beam antennas (Butternut Butterfly Beams ? smaller but effective), etc, destined at some point for use either in Field Day, or to help out other Hams, especially newly licensed Techs. That said, before you march out to purchase these items, a simple phone call may procure them for FREE. They may not match what you have perfectly, but once installed 30 feet up in a tree or on a mast it surely is hard to tell the shape, color, etc. One day I should take a large white sheet and spread it out on a table and arrange the parts for a photo to distribute to club members so they can look over the inventory. We have managed from the pieces parts and tubing to construct 3 vertical antennas including a Hustler 4BTV. Again ? the price is the best in town ? FREE with no sales tax or shipping. And again ? don?t thank me ? thank our benefactor Gale Heise. I am just the repository. BTW, I am looking for someone to take a look at one of the Butternut beams (using the assembly instructions) to verify it?s completeness and suitability for use this coming Field Day. As for the loop ? the website on Full Wave Loop Skywire indicates that 574 feet or 560 feet are the two best lengths for a loop that is at least 25 feet high which should be a piece of cake to achieve. The website indicates that the resonant points are as follows: The formula for a calculating the length of a full wave loop antenna is: Length (feet) = 1005/f MHz. a.. 544' is comfortably resonant at 1.847kHz, 3.694kHz, 7.389kHz, 14.779kHz and 29.558kHz. Not an optimal length. b.. 560' is comfortably resonant at 1.794kHz, 3.589kHz, 7.178kHz, 14.357kHz and 28.714kHz. Not an optimal length. c.. 565' is comfortably resonant at 1.778kHz, 3.557kHz, 7.115kHz, 14.230kHz and 28.460kHz. Still a little short. d.. 574' is comfortably resonant at 1.750kHz, 3.5kHz, 7.00kHz, 14.000kHz and 28.000kHz Here is the website referenced: http://n1su.com/loop.html. I do not know if the wire used was insulated or bare. I assume the velocity factor difference would come into play for antenna lengths. I think I will email N1SU and ask. My RigExpert antenna analyzer can screen for all the resonant points at one time so checking it out should be relatively easy. A quick glance has us easily over 18 inches. and that doesn't add the small fractions of an inch in the record. It is good however that all this rain hasn't fallen in the upper Guadalupe watershed. Had it fallen there there would have been massive flooding on the Guadalupe right now - what a difference a few miles makes. It's the same as the BIG storm in July 2002 when 52 inches of rain fell in 4 days at my QTH. We lost our whole lake spillway in that storm. The current vanity call sign regulatory fee is $21.40, the highest in several years. The FCC reported there were 11,500 ?payment units? in FY 2014 and estimated that it would collect nearly $246,100. In its 2014 Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) regarding the assessment and collection of regulatory fees for FY 2014, the FCC had sought comment on eliminating several smaller regulatory fee categories, such as those for vanity call signs and GMRS. It concluded in the subsequent Report and Order (R&O) last summer, however, that it did not have ?adequate support to determine whether the cost of recovery and burden on small entities outweighed the collected revenue or whether eliminating the fee would adversely affect the licensing process.? The FCC said it has since had an opportunity to obtain and analyze support concerning the collection of the regulatory fees for Amateur Vanity and GMRS, which the FCC said comprise, on average, more than 20,000 licenses that are newly obtained or renewed, every 10 and 5 years, respectively. ?The Commission often receives multiple applications for the same vanity call sign, but only one applicant can be issued that call sign,? the FCC explained. ?In such cases, the Commission issues refunds for all the remaining applicants. In addition to staff and computer time to process payments and issue refunds, there is an additional expense to issue checks for the applicants who cannot be refunded electronically.? The Commission said that after it provides the required congressional notification, Amateur Radio vanity program applicants ?will no longer be financially burdened with such payments, and the Commission will no longer incur these administrative costs that exceed the fee payments. The revenue that the Commission would otherwise collect from these regulatory fee categories will be proportionally assessed on other wireless fee categories.? The FCC said it would not issue refunds to licensees who paid the regulatory fee prior to its official elimination. Blanco County has sustained flood damage and six Data Assessment Teams have been requested. The local Chapter is requesting one radio operator for each team. Three teams will be deployed to Johnson City and three to Blanco. Each team will report to a central operator who will then send the report back to the local Chapter. Not only does the Red Cross use these reports, FEMA also uses these reports. The Red Cross will have a meeting at 07:00 AM tomorrow at the local Chapter. I can buy replacement silver crimp sleeves to replace either a badly crimped one or if I want to reuse the connector. At the price of them, I do want to reuse them. Does anyone know of a source for just the solder on pins that are used with N connectors?? Having these would allow reuse of the body (expensive part of the fitting) by replacing the pin and crimp sleeve. Vetco sells the pins at $1.60 each which is highway robbery. Replacement crimp sleeves are 30-40 cents each. In most cases I would try to unsolder the pin for reuse, but poop happens occasionally!! Every little bit helps. If anyone sees them at a Hamfest, for 50 cents or so, please pick up 50 for me or get the sellers phone and email for me!! Gary J N5BAA
