I can buy replacement silver crimp sleeves to replace either a badly crimped one or if I want to reuse the connector.? At the price of them, I do want to reuse them.? Does anyone know of a source for just the solder on pins that are used with N connectors??? Having these would allow reuse of the body (expensive part of the fitting) by replacing the pin and crimp sleeve.? Vetco sells the pins at $1.60 each which is highway robbery.? Replacement crimp sleeves are 30-40 cents each.? In most cases I would try to unsolder the pin for reuse, but poop happens occasionally!!? Every little bit helps. If anyone sees them at a Hamfest, for 50 cents or so, please pick up 50 for me or get the sellers phone and email for me!! Thanks to all who participated in the club Field Day planning session last night, to those who had participated earlier, to those that volunteered equipment and time, and especially to Chuck Hopkins (N5HOP) who volunteered to honcho the food for Field Day. Please respond to Chucks requests that are sure to come about what you might bring for a potluck for Saturday evenings meal. We will be getting some additional information out as to when we will start setting antennas on the Friday before Field Day begins and where we might meet for a meal before hand. There will be plenty to do, plenty to learn as we will be assembling a Cushcraft A4S 4 element beam, a HexBeam and putting up 574 ft of wire for a 160-10 meter loop. The link to the loop is here - http://n1su.com/loop.html. In this link there are numerous lengths given with approx resonant frequencies. Could someone figure out which length might be best for Field Day operations. Just think ? where else will you be able to try out so many ?new to you? antennas. That?s worth attending Field Day for, if for nothing else ? surely cheaper than buying one of each to try. AGAIN: Please respond to Chucks requests that are sure to come about what you might bring for a potluck for Saturday evenings meal. If you have desires for specific operating times, we can put together a sign up sheet for times if it appears that it might be necessary (oh we should be so lucky!!!) to schedule operators and loggers. For the past few years we have been doing mostly ?Search and Pounce? vs calling CQ (also known as running I think). If we are going to be calling CQ like we did at Winter Field Day, we will definitely need people to log for the operator as there just isn?t the time for the operator to do both. For new people ? running a pile-up (calling CQ) while somewhat daunting to a new person who is learning to LISTEN on a radio is a blast ? very quick paced if done right and there is nowhere a better time to learn than at Field Day. Field Day is partly about new operators learning with all the attendant mistakes that will inevitably be made. Just remember ? everyone has made the same mistakes many times over ? none either started nor are currently perfect!!! You haven?t lived until you have keyed the mic and had your mind go blank ? it?s gonna happen, more than once ? get used to it. I will be putting out another updated list of who is bringing what, as soon as my XYL (wife) brings me a new wireless keyboard ? the dogs spun my desk chair and sent half a bottle of Diet Dew all over my current one and my poor fingers are too big for the laptop keyboard this is being typed on (the A key is way to close to the Caps lock key). Larry Altman ? please give me a call about Publicity ? 830-496-0102. Jeff Lavender please call also. Larry, Paula and Steve and other publicity minded folks ? what would stop us from moving the club tower trailer inside the OLH Fence along Hwy 27 with something that looks like a beam antenna on it and using it to display a banner a couple of weeks before Field Day?? Paula is teaching me to think outside the box!! Permission to use the space shouldn?t be hard to get from OLH. I will bring all of my Heil Headsets and a set of Sennheiser earphones and a headset that only has one earpiece for those that like to have one ear open. I have replacement windscreens for the mics and replacement cotton ear piece covers also. They are all quickly washable and easily dried to ensure as much sanitation as needed. One other thing needed is either foot controls or PTT hand controls. One of my hand controls does not work (found that out at Winter FD). I have 2 sets of foot controls. We have my 30 foot push up, three 36-40 foot crank up masts, one 35 ft tower/mast section, and the club tower trailer, not to mention enough 4 foot aluminum military mast sections to put up 4-5 more 32 foot masts, PLUS the light towers on the football field that are at least 50 feet high and the gable end of the pavilion on each end which are approx 30 ft high. I doubt we have that many antennas to put up (VHF/UHF, Cushcraft A4S, Hexbeam, Loop, a couple of Off Center Fed Dipoles, maybe a 40/80 inverted V). I've reserved a private room for us provided we have 20 or more in the group. I need an accurate count to give the restaurant so they'll know how many to prepare for. Please let me know by Wednesday, June 24, if you plan to attend. After the lunch, we'll make our way out to the Catholic school on Peterson Farm Road to start setting up antennas, rigs, etc. for FD, which begins at 1pm on Saturday. If for some reason, you can't make the lunch, just meet us out at the FD site. Here at the N5XO station, I will be operating Single Op on 50MHz {Primary in the 50.125 to 50.145 area}, 144MHz {Primary in the 144.200 area and 144.205 area}, 222 MHz {Primary on 222.100} and 432MHz {Primary 432.100} and 1296MHz. I really hope to work you this contest...So listen for me and help with the points. Also please see below message from HAMster #5 Marshal K5QE and his super contest station. Hello to all our friends in the VHF world from the K5QE contest team.... K5QE will be operating in the ARRL June VHF Contest and would really appreciate any contacts that we can make during the contest. We will begin normal operation at the beginning of the contest--1PM CDST on Saturday, June 13th. We will be operating as a Limited Multi-op on 6M, 2M, 222MHz, and 432MHz. The contest ends at 10PM CDST Sunday night. There are new rules for ARRL VHF contests. Assistance is now allowed to everyone. The new rules for Assistance are extremely liberal....basically you can do just about anything, EXCEPT for posting any contact information. This means that we cannot post "Thank you" after a contact, because it confirms that the contact is complete. Please understand if we don't send you a thank you post. The rules just don't allow that, even though we do it routinely when not contesting. When we were in the Falkland Islands(VP8), Arliss and I used Dan's(N5TM) chat page. Dan made a VP8-EME tab for us. That worked out VERY well. I have asked Dan to make a K5QE Tab for chat.n5tm.com. So just go to chat.n5tm.com, login with your Call, Name, and Grid. Then click on the K5QE tab. HINT: We will always be monitoring chat.n5tm.com(K5QE Tab). So you can contact us there if necessary. Please call in on 2M on 144.200MHz or on 432.100MHz and we will work you there and on all the other bands that we can. We really appreciate your helping us out with contacts where ever possible. Thanks in advance. LATE NIGHT OPERATIONS: On 6M, IF the band is NOT open for Es, then we will be running meteor scatter(MS) using FSK441 OR we will be looking for long haul contacts using JT65A. When we are running meteor scatter, we will be on 50.265MHz and we will be using the PingJockey chat page. When we are trying for long haul tropo contacts on 6M, we will be on 50.276MHz and we will be using the N0UK JT65 Terrestrial chat page. Just look for us those chat pages. When we are running MS on 2M, we will be on 144.142MHz using FSK441 and we will be using the PingJockey chat page. Trying JT65b for 2M will be done by arrangement if required. Sometimes, a really long QSO can be made when the band is apparently dead, by using JT65. During Late Night Operations, tropo stations can call in on 432.100MHz or 222.100MHz. We should be able to pick you up there. We will still work you on the other bands, by stopping digital operations for just a short time. We very much want to get you in the log, even if it is late at night. Our moonrise is 0950Z = 4:50AM on Sunday morning. We will be running EME on 2M and 432 after that time, but we will still monitor 2M terrestrial. If you hear us, just contact us on one of the chat rooms above, and we will stop EME long enough to work you. When we are running EME, we will be on the N0UK EME-1 chat page. EARLY MORNING OPERATIONS: Especially on 2M and 432, if you are an intermediate range station, please look for us carefully in the early AM hours of Sunday morning, say from 7AM to 10AM, when we have the best chance of a tropo opening. It is amazing how far you can work during those "magic hours" if you just get a bit of enhancement. If you hear us but we don't hear you right away, please contact us on one of the reflectors listed above. HINT: We will always be monitoring chat.n5tm.com(K5QE Tab). A Polar Cap Absorption event is in progress but I can't guess how long it will continue. Bands are likely to be quite a mess for Field Day this year. After lunch, we'll go to our Field Day Site (Our Lady of the Hills Catholic School on Peterson Farm Road) to begin Set-up. Please email/call me by Wednesday night to save your place at lunch at LaFours (the best catfish in town!) If we have more than 20, we'll be in a back room; if less than 20, we'll be in the regular dining room (costs $25 for the back room if less than 20 come) If you can't make the lunch, just meet us out at the FD Site around 1:00pm. If you can't stay the whole time for FD, come when you can and help us in some way with the FD Operation: make some qso's, help with various tasks onsite, etc. Also, it would be greatly appreciated if you call Gary before you come out to see if he needs you to pick up something we need for FD. Setup and Takedown are important times at Field Day, and your help then would also be greatly appreciated. As with most things, you will get out of something about what you put into it, so put some fun and energy into helping the club have a fantastic Field Day, and I know that you will get a lot of fun and satisfaction in return for being a part of the Field Day Team. 73, Lew W5LEW 505.419.2713 w5lew at arrl.net From qltfnish at omniglobal.net Fri Jun 19 20:47:55 2015 From: qltfnish at omniglobal.net (Gary J - N5BAA) Date: Fri, 19 Jun 2015 19:47:55 -0500 Subject: [HCARC] June Rain to Date Message-ID: <226FC5DAB2BB487099D6D44610D87105@GaryPC> 2.84 inches this month to date. Become an Amazon Prime member and you get "free" access to their Prime video library. There is a streaming service called Hulu (it will be one of the choices on the Roku box) that carries many TV programs. You are most likely too far away to pick up San Antonio locals on over-the-air. About the only reason we have DirecTV is watch San Antonio local news, Fox and Turner Classic Movies. Never ever use an Internet provider (like HTC) for email access, get a Gmail account - it goes with you everywhere and is provider agnostic. I will check out the rotator tomorrow. It goes on the ground and the mast fits into it. I have enough rotator cable to reach the pavilion. I'll leave it to others to bring tp, trash bags, etc. I do have bug spray in the truck. People should bring desk lamps for nighttime operating. I will bring one. I have made a list of satellite passes. Harvey and I checked out the mounting of the satellite antennas today. It should go together Ok at the site. It's still not clear what radio we will use for 6 meters. Harvey has an IC-706 but it would be better to have a better radio, more sensitivity and selectivity. Any of the current HF radios that include 6 meters, will do fine. We hope to use Harvey's FT-736 for the satellite, but he has to refamiliarize himself regarding its satellite operation. We'll need one or two power supplies. I can bring one if required, but it's heavy and I would prefer not to lift it. And, it has a very noisy fan. Great idea - I have 2 plus a handful of lights that mount on your head and have both red and white lights on them. Red is a good light to use to not kill your night vision. I need to go over to the pavilion tomorrow after dark to assess the bug situation. We might want to bring a Bug zapper to place out in the field away from the pavilion to attract the bugs to the black light. Might cause too much radio noise though. If we went with a decreased number of antennas I would suggest the Hexbeam (it's easy to build and is educational for all), maybe a smaller loop say for 40 or 80 meters, and the OCF Dipoles which go up easily. I also have a ALPHA DELTA DX-A 160-80-40 METER TWIN SLOPER that could supplement 160-40 that would use the metal tower trailer as it's needed path to ground (see http://www.alphadeltacom.com/dxa_ii.htm). At any rate, it's easy to bring the antennas as they are already packed. It's good to be able to pick and choose. Do we want to reduce the number of transmitters operating to 2 plus GOTA and VHF/UHF??
