If you really want the answer, although somewhat dated, you need to look 
at a series of articles in QST from 1966.  The title is "Station Design 
fro DX" and it ran in four parts in the Sep, Oct, Nov, and Dec 1966 
QST.  It looked at the costs for each additional dB of performance for 
such things as antenna tower height, boom length, power, etc.  Naturally 
the cost of each additional dB depends on which segment you are trying 
to improve and your level in that segment.  Costs have gone up since 
then as well as the power, tower heights, boom lengths, etc but at least 
you can see how it is done.  And it doesn't mention internet web sites 
or spotting nets - these were real hams!
