[HCARC] Field Day Antennas

Why is the answer to everything "It's too much trouble" or No?? So we will
just sit with a large amount of unused equipment sitting around in boxes
collecting dust, that could be sold, thus making more space, and use the
funds to do something that would be a SERVICE to the club members. It
doesn't make sense that anyone who needs a couple of this coupler and XX
amount of feet of common coax should get on the phone and order in small
quantities and then pay for the shipment each time. Hard as it might be to
believe we do have many members who just don't have piles of extra money
lying around to spend on shipping common parts purchased at increased prices
that is the rule when buying in smaller quantities and paying shipping each
time. Or maybe we are as interested in supporting the UPS and the USPS as
we are in helping members.

OF COURSE THE ABOVE COULD BE ANOTHER REASON THAT SO FEW OF DALE'S TECH
GRADUATES STAY ACTIVE AND JOIN THE CLUB. Since I took Dale's course over 2
1/2 years ago, there are no more than 4-5 people including myself that have
remained active in the club. Including my class he has taught in excess of
30 (probably 40, many of whom Linda Ransom and I have recruited from the
Preppers) people who have gone on to get licensed. If only 15-20% (probably
less) of those graduates are still active and are club members we are surely
doing something wrong. Could it be that we don't offer much to the newly
licensed Ham??? Have we assigned an Elmer to any of these people - some
people don't like to ask or don't know to ask , and I'd bet many don't know
what an Elmer is. I try to help the new Techs, but with only 2 + years of
experience, with me it is frequently the blind leading the blind.

It's just like I complain about with the Club station. It sits idle most of
the time because there is no set policy, nor any formal training available
for using it. I've operated there twice - both times with Gale Heise. I
have said before, on at least big contest weekends it should be at least
opened up to club members to participate in the contests. BUT THAT TAKES
PERSONAL TIME AND A VOLUNTEER, and if you have ever stood in front of this
club trying to get a volunteer for anything you know that is not likely to
happen. Maybe that is why it is so hard to find people willing to be Club
Officers.

If the above is true, then why bother running a GOTA Station at Field Day.
Why pay the $55.00 for a booth space at Market Days if we don't really care
whether anyone is interested in radio ever continues that interest??

Just my .02 cents.

Let's not get into running a store.
We hardly have enough room for the stuff we have now without trying to
handle rolls of coax, etc.
Anything you need you can order on-line or by phone and get it in a week's
time.
We may have 100 ft of RG-214 left over if the repeater fix works out.

In this case do we want to possibly buy RG-8X vs RG-8U that was approved or
maybe LMR-240?? I agree with Fred that we might want to change out the
station coax as it is quite possible that we will be having more and more
Field Days at the Red Cross in the future - air conditioning is mighty
attractive in Texas. A kitchen being handy is great too and we don't have
to go and import tables and chairs, nor pay for the space to have it.

Robert Russell, Hank Folk and I have had excellent results with the Shireen
RFC-400 we bought and their prices on the other cables are excellent too.
It's possible to get RFC-240 for less than RG-8X. I can get the Shireen
RFC-240 ultraflex for 55 cents a foot in a spool of 250 feet and the regular
RFC-240 in 1000 foot spools for approx 31.7 cents per foot. I have said for
a long time that the club should have a stock of the common items people
need such as Coax, PL-259's, SO-239's so we can buy them at bulk prices and
sell them to club members at a small profit, but still less than ordering
them by the One each and paying shipping over and over each time. It is
shipping that kills you in a place like Kerrville. I can get Amphenol
Pl-259's including shipping for about $2.00 each if bought in groups of 10,
where they are $3.50 if bought singly and the shipping cost is about the
same. Why not help out club members as well as having the connector/coax in
stock when we need it for a repair or in an emergency???

Here is a link to Shireen and their products so you can check them out for
yourselves: http://www.shireeninc.com/low-loss-rf-coax-cables-uv-rated/
The company is located in Germantown, MD and supplies to much of industry
and they guarantee their Coax to meet or beat any of the others.

I can have the coax here within a week.

Due to the limitations of the building feed through conduit we only have a
few coax's (RG-8's) available.
The HF antennas are combined outside by a remote coax switch box. There is
one spare feed through cable however.
There are separate coax's for the 2M and 2M/.7M antennas.
Fred has an idea of replacing all the present RG-8's with RG-8X cable thus
gaining a few more lines passing through. Someone could make a calculation
about how many lines would be gained. Making this change would not be easy,
however and time is getting short.
For field day we may have to pass coax through the partially opened window,
but then you wouldn't want a generator running nearby.

Gary,

You may only need to put an antenna up for the GOTA station across the
street. Questions you need to answer are:
         1. Do the existing 40 and 80 m dipoles have separate transmission
lines?
         2. Can you operate one transceiver on the 20/15/10 Vertical and
another on the dipoles simultaneously?
         3. If the answer to 1 is yes, can you operate with one transceiver
on 80m and another on 40 m simultaneously?
         4. Is operation even permitted on 30/17/12 m for field day, if not
you don't need any WARC antennas?

If you can operate on 80 and/or 40 simultaneously with 20/15/10, then that
is probably all you need. You won't be able to operate two stations on any
single band even with separate antennas behind the RC Building. I suggest
that if you really don't need to add any more antennas you shouldn't.

You should check out all the antennas and transmission lines that are a
permanent part of the station a couple weeks ahead of time in case you need
to make any repairs.

If you are operating as 2 or 3F (why not 4F!!) then I don't think setup time
is even a factor since the station is ostensibly part of a "permanent"
emergency fascility.

Kerry
