There were /are at least 2 types of LORAN. LORAN A is the 160 m version and I think may still be used in some places. LORAN C is the VLF version. I'm not sure if that is still active either. GPS, with all its own problems, is slowly taking over the navigation world.. LORAN A was developed during WW II. During the Viet Nam era, there were LORAN A receivers in many aircraft including AF fighters like the F4 Phantom. That was with vacuum tube technology. I'm sure solid state versions would be more than suitable for baloons. Navigation uncertainties for LORAN were generally described as a fraction of a lane, so Harvey, if that terminology was used, it was probably LORAN and may have been L ORAN C if you think it was VLF.
