No, it wasn't that.  It wasn't just for maritime navigation.
I think it was on VLF with transmitters scattered around producing
criss-crossing "lanes" of directional signals.  Position was determined by
measuring timing between lane crossings, so it was pretty slow.

Did you use that old navigation system that could only resolve positions
down to 6 miles?  I forget what it was called.  It was used by NCAR on the
balloon flights >40 years ago.

We used ASR-35 TTYs for interfaces to our HP-2116 computers, which
controlled our first computer-controlled data acquisition systems. 
Entered source programs through the keyboard or with paper tape via the
mechanical tape reader.  The 35 also had a tape punch on it. Slow as the
devil.  We sure were happy when we got the optical reader/punch machines!
