[HCARC] 2 Meter Antenna

Yes, there has been some noise problems with the repeater in the past few weeks that seems to be tied to high wind conditions. A noise that could be described as popcorn like.
However, last Thursday Chuck, KA1PM, climbed the tower and tightened things up and it seems to be better now. Today will be a better test as winds are supposed to get up to 20-25 mph.
What I was hearing on Johnny's signal last night was that it was dropping out completely at times like it might be slightly off frequency or being over deviated.
What's not appreciated about FM is that the louder you talk in a weak signal situation, the more you deviate and the more likely your signal is to drop out of the receiver.
So speak softly and get a bigger antenna. :-)

Johnny,

The N5HR repeater has been having a problem lately. At least half the sta tions that call into the Monday night net have a problem. For some reason the repeater receiver is picking up a lot of noi se. The noi se you are probably hearing is being transmitted by the repeater. Using a gain antenna for receive will not help you at all. On transmit, if your signal is one of the no isy ones, a gain antenna may help give you a better signal to noise ratio at the repeater receiver. The real solution to the problem is to figure out what the problem is with the repeater receiver and get that fixed.

Perhaps Harvey can give us an update on the repeater noise situation.

In any event, I don't think it is a problem with your antenna or transceiver.

Kerry, K5KS
