[HCARC] Packet Echolink and IRLP

As one of the regular Echolink users I was disappointed to read Fred's email. I enjoy very much the ability to check in with my ham friends in Kerrville when I am back up north in Chicago.
There have been many good comments already made on this issue and I concur with them all. Kerry especially gave a good background on the evolution of FM repeaters.
The thing that I would like to ad is that ham radio has a variety of modes and reasons to operate. VHF-FM is just one. Sure, many hams, especially new hams today, have their first introduction into ham radio with a 2m FM rig. Some of them stay there and others expand their horizons and upgrade their license class. We have HF, VHF/UHF, CW, SSB, RTTY, public service, DXing, ragchewing, contesting, PSK31, JT65HF, EME, satellites, IRLP and Echolink just to name a few. Most of us pick a few of these modes and/or methods of operating and have a good time. Some develop better technical skills than others in the process. Some are content at being "appliance operators". Ham radio has changed quite a bit when I first began almost 50 years ago. Computers and the internet have certainly contributed to that change. I say bring it on. I may not adapt all that has or will come during my time as a ham but I sure won't discourage others from jumping in
and trying what they will. I think that all these things and more is what makes ham radio so interesting and so much fun.
Now, having been an Echolink sysop for a Chicago repeater for a number of years I have experienced many comments both pro and con for Echolink. Some of those comments came with a late night phone call. My position was very simple. Take it up with the club officers and Board of Directors (Executive Committee for the HCARC). They are elected to make these decisions for the club. It seems to me that that is what needs to happen in this situation. For selfish reasons, I hope they would wish to continue using Echolink on the HCARC repeater.

Jerry

All,
Due to a complaint I would like to offer an apology to everyone I have offended with my add-ons to the N5HR repeater. I do not want to do anything that will make the club loose members. At this time I have removed the RMS, Echolink and IRLP. I will continue to operate the IRLP 7779 node, but it will be on 146.52 as a simplex link into Kerrville. Everyone who can reach my location on simplex is welcome to use it. The callsign will become W0LPD. Echolink has been shut down until further notice or someone else takes the sysop responsibilities. The computer equipment at the club station I donated to the club, but the transceiver is on loan from K3NXF and should be returned to him if no one steps up.

Fred / W0LPD
