[HCARC] Field Day Antennas, ETC

Correct. I should have been more careful in my grammar. I've been an active REACT member since first joining fresh out of high school in 1973. In Texas, I've been active with REACT since I moved down here in 1984.

We = Hill Country REACT in this case.

Sorry for any confusion.

Lee,

The “WE” you are referring to is what WE – I presume not HCARC.

Gary, regarding the trailer license fee... the Hill Country REACT team maintains a trailer licence for our golf cart trailer.

We used to have a Comm Trailer, but sold our old heavy one (required a 3/4 ton truck to pull it), in favor of obtaining a newer, lighter weight trailer that we'll be setting up as a self contained Comm Trailer early next year.

There are no discounts on Texas license plate fees, except one. You can get an "emergency vehicle" classification license plate for something like $5/year, if your county Sherrif signs off on the request. But then that vehicle / trailer is restricted for use only during emergency response or drills practicing for emergency response (covers a lot of territory, doesn't it?).

Enforcement of that restriction is up to your local law enforcement to interpret the proper usage definition. That can be a double edge sword, but as long as you maintain a good relationship with them and don't overly abuse the privilege of the plate restrictions, you ought to be okay. In other words, don't use it daily to haul stuff around.

Our golf cart trailer is used for too many public service events, so we chose not to apply on it. But the new Comm Trailer plates will be the.emergency plates. That's an easy "sell" to the Sherrif.

Hope this info helps.

The fiberglass antenna pole sections plus some antennas and necessary COAX
and fittings and even a generator or solar battery setup would be very
useful. The fiberglass poles I am giving to the Club are what we used last
Field Day?? Rather than LESS EQUIPMENT, I think it is important for the
club to not be beholden to any club member for equipment in the event of
disaster. Think about it, if the disaster is bad enough, club members most
likely would be making sure that their families are being taken care of vs
providing their equipment to the club. Being prepared, IF we truly are
serious about supporting the Red Cross, et al means more than just a
Memorandum of Understanding. As for useful, a small trailer with the
necessary equipment stored inside would mean easy transport to an emergency
site, and secure storage while we were there.

As for a trailer, it just seemed like a good idea. And btw, if we are
paying to store the antenna tower trailer, that is crazy. Someone in the
club probably has a spot of property they could store the tower trailer - I
do if necessary. My comment on the cost of registering a small trailer was
a question on what the registration would cost and as a non-profit would we
get a break on the fee - or has no one ever thought to ask?? I will call
tomorrow to find out.

How useful would they be, really?
The club already has to have a storage place for the portable tower trailer.
That costs a license annually.

Jeff, et al

In the interest of helping out Field Day and as well as increasing our
flexibility when choosing Field Day sites, I have the approx 80-90 feet of
fiberglass military surplus antenna sections that I want to donate to the
club. Problem is they take up space, which is something that seems to be in
short supply in the club. Where do we usually store Field Day
supplies/equipment?? The alternative is that I can store them in the back
of my garage until needed. Do we have somewhere where these type of things
are stored?? What would be really nice would be to have a small enclosed
trailer (4x8 ish) like Jeff rented last year. That would make responding
to emergencies as well as Field Day much easier.

If we had a small enclosed trailer, would we get a good deal from the state
on registering it since we are a non-profit??

Jeff – Butch Lackey has a small trailer that was once used for small stock
that he has been trying to sell for years. It’s located where he sells
implements on Main Street in Center Point – way in the back. Lets drop by
and look at it one evening and see if Butch would make a real good deal on
it or maybe even donate it to the club.
