Yes, Charley, I have two FORTRAN compileers and they are both for DOS, one
is an old Microsoft FORTRAN compiler. Gnu has a FORTRAN compiler also that
I haven't tried yet that should work on Windows. I'm running some of the
other Gnu software and it is pretty good.
My VISTA desktop didn't come with a floppy drive but it did have an extra
slot and I put one in. Works fine. No problem with the OS. I couldn't do
the same for the laptops however. I either have to transfer stuff over my
network or use the ZIP drive that plugs into a USB port or USB memory stick
. The 5 1/4" floppies are another matter. My only choice with them is to
copy from the 5 1/4" to the 3 1/2" drives on the 486 DOS computer. I've seen
the USB floppy drives but haven't acquired one yet.
I've had pretty good luck running DOS programs on my XP machine but VISTA
just won't do it. I guess Microsoft is irritated that there are some people
still running antique software and haven't bought new ones from Microsoft.
They will fix us one way or the other. My wife's laptop has Win 7 Home
Premium but I go out of my way not to put any of my programs on her
machine - makes life easier!
I've been very wary of the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool! I
haven't had any problem with it deleting any software I use, but I could see
it going through and deleting all the obselete and non-commercial software.
It hasn't happened yet! As far as Win 9 goes, every new OS that Microsoft
puts out seems to limit what the user can do more than the previous one.
While the old OS doesn't have all the features of the new one, it does give
the knowledgable user more freedom to do what he wants. Just my opinion.
73,
Kerry
