Bill and Gary,
The situation is very bad as far as computers go. I expect in the very near
future we won't be able to buy desktop PC's any more and even laptops will
become hard to find. The manufacturers are all headed towards mobile
"computing" and no it is not computing, its having wideband internet where
ever you are on a small handheld device, either a tablet or a pad or a
"phone". Thats what Windows 8 really is about. Its not intended for
Desktops or laptops. A desktop touch screen just doesn't seem practical.
Also, there just isn't enough bandwidth for mobile computing and that is
what is driving the spectrum grabs by people like Google.
Mobile computing is to real computing as CB is to ham radio. It is getting
increasingly difficult to run old software on new operating systems and they
aren't writing new software that will do the same thing for the new
software. Try to find a BASIC interpreter or a FORTRAN compiler for Windows
8!
Note that the big companies aren't interested in what people want, they are
interested in selling whatever they can make the most profit on. If they
have to build a market for what they want to sell, then they will. In the
meantime those of us who want a computer that is useful and can actually
compute are out of luck. New computing devices will be optimized for
tweets, Utube, downloading video and music, etc. Those who want a computer
that can actually do calculations for solving engineering or scientific
problems don't count.
Hang on to your old computers and software and learn to operate with
interference from all the digital trash, or give in and use your miraculous
computing devices for tweets, video downloads and e-mail like the rest of
the world!
Kerry.
