Some of you may know I have been working at w**lmart for the last 8 months selling electronics (part-time retirement age employee). In October when Win8 was released all our laptops were pulled and returned to the mfr. They were replaced with machines installed with win8. In the ensuing months I have any number of customers come ask how they could get win7 as they are totally unsatisfied with win8. I have to tell them that I am not aware of any source.

In past years when buying a new computer shortly after upgrades in OS, I was able to buy the preceding version of OS for a premium (like $100 for XP when Vista was new). Dell offered that but only for a short time at the introduction period for Vista. A year later and XP was no longer available in new computers. I could have upgraded Vista to win7 for $120 but put it off.

I run XP32 in most of my current computers with Vista in a 2009 Dell laptop. I totally dislike it and will upgrade to win8 soon. This is because a good friend at MS sent it to me. I am upgrading to gain some knowledge of using it for ability to help customers at work. If it is as bad as Vista i have not lost anything. My Dell laptop is mainly is a travel computer and sits on the shelf most of the time.

It is apparent to me that win8 is an effort to make laptops look and operate like smart phones and tablets (using touch screens). Unfortunately, with normal display, mouse and keyboard interface it is "very not fun".

Might be a good time to decide on a switch to Linux or Unix. I have put that off as I have enough stuff on my to-do list.
I probably will hold onto my XP machines as long as possible.

I still have my original PackardBell P100 and a old IBM P90 Thinkpad with win95. The thinkpad is still in use for two programs that run under DOS.

Y'all may or may not be aware that Bill Gates & Co. have stopped selling Windows 7. You can still buy OEM versions at Frys, but not sure how long it will last. I got a version of 7 Professional for $140. Home Premium is $100 or so. From what I have heard, you do not want Windows 8. Seems they get every other operating system right and 8 is one of the bad ones(along with 95, Millennium, Vista, etc.).

Thanks for the tips Bob, I was going to install on my laptop today, but now will wait until it arrives.

I do run XP on all my machines at present, one may be going to Win7 in a week or so.

Will be looking for further updates.

Wee!!! This high technology is fun!!!

The installation is a little tricky:
Install the latest version of .Net before installing SDR#
Some of the stuff has to be installed by the administrator; I'll find info on this
There is installation info at rtlsdr.org wiki that was helpful when I installed the program on my laptop.
Don't do the installation until you have your dongle, as it has to be inserted at a certain point in the installation
If you're installing onto a XP computer, one of the support files has to be a version written for XP. I'll get more details on this.

    More to follow. . . .
