Back in the 70's and 80's ITS ran an "ionospheric heater" in Platteville,
CO. The "heater" had a lot of antennas pointed straight up. I believe the
operating frequency was around 3 MHz, a vibrational frequency of
molecules/atoms in the upper atmosphere. As I recall the EIRP was in the MW
class. There was a relatively efficient transfer from the MF EM wave to the
molecules/atoms which created a plasma, exactly what aurora is! O. G.
Villard from Stanford was involved in this and was collecting observations
from hams. The "artificial aurora" aligned along the geomagnetic field
lines. As a result the reflections were such that propagation was possible
from your location to a line of locations elsewhere. You couldn't work just
anybody. The "heater" was periodically turned off from time to time and the
signals would drop out. This helped identify the mode. The signals had a
doppler signature similar to auroral reflected signals. I worked a few
stations in AZ and southern CA on 6 m CW using this mode. There was
absolutely no mystrey about what was going on. There were a couple articles
in QST on the subject and I believe the author was O.G Villard, a name every
ham used to recognize. I believe he was one of the first 2 or 3 stations
that got on 20 m SSB in the late 40's.
