Greetings everyone!
My name is John Luttrell and as noted in my subject line, I am from Harper.
I have been around radios of one type or another since the 70's of when I
had my first shortwave receiver that lit up my room with a warm glow from
the vacuum tubes, upon my bulletin board I had so many post cards from
around the world of stations I had tuned in to and listened with great
wonder.
Through the years I have gone many places, but now I am settled down (my
wife Kimberly and I are retired Military). I had been wanting to help out
with the local Volunteer Fire Department here in Harper, or to help with
any of this region, but because of some of my injuries I am not a candidate
to be pulling fire hoses around or standing for long periods of time.
So that made me think that pursuing my Amateur Radio Operator's License
might be something to look into. I am a Medic by Military specialty as is
my Wife, so that also put me into the light to want to help with any
emergencies or training in our area. Also Volunteer work is our only
option, (as opposed to a full or part time job).
At any rate, a Google helped me find you guys and now I have yet made it
but one more step closer to receiving my license and helping as many as I
am able.
Also, since this is pretty new to me, as far as what I know, being old
vacuum tube assemblies and or watching my Commo guy send in daily reports
on his comsat radio.. I am totally clueless when it comes to trying to put
all of this together and as it stands, I do not want to just merely earn my
license and not really know anything else about Radio except what narrow
info I might know to have passed the tests.
Which is also why I hope to have also found you all in great spirits and
joy to have a "noobie" around. Hehe
I will eventually need equipment, but I am sure that will all come in due
time also. - Currently I have not a clue on what transceiver, or piece of
gear is best suited for me at the moment or what price range to shoot for,
alone I would most likely spend a fortune or not enough.
So thank you and feel free to contact me whenever you feel, as I will be
studying and reading with great hopes of helping out my Community and
Neighbors.
Thank you in advance
Sincerely,
John Luttrell

Hi Harvey,
Due to health reasons, I am going to relocate to the Schertz area to be near
my kids and need to sell (or maybe even trade) my collection of
antique/vintage telegraph sounders & keys and a fairly extensive collection
of Edison light bulbs, player, etc. I'm forwarding photos of the items and
even the 12 foot long shelving unit will go too. The shelving unit is also
an antique that has a story also. I bought it at an auction and was told it
came from the old post office at Jarrel, TX and was the only thing left when
the EF5 tornado hit it a few years ago. Harvey, I would consider trading
the whole collection of all on the shelving unit including the shelving unit
for a decent HF Transceiver. Thank you so much, I would really appreciate
any help and/or suggestions. I live in Fredericksburg and phone numbers
are: cell 830-998-0920; home 830-992-3510.

John:
Greetings! You've come to the right place.
Our club is large and our members are active in many aspects of amateur
radio. We have a club station located at the American Red Cross building in
Kerrville where, incidentally, we meet on the first Thursday of the month.
Our next meeting is this coming Thursday, June 6th. We have an introductory
program and meet and greet starting around 6:30pm, with the main meeting and
program beginning at 7pm. Non-members and those not yet licensed are welcome
to attend. The American Red Cross is located at 333 Earl Garrett (corner of
Earl Garrett and Jefferson, just across from the Kerr County courthouse).
Our club website is www.herrhams.org where you'll find a lot of information
about our club.
Also this month is a great time to start up with ham radio as our premier
operating event, Field Day, is the weekend of June 22-23. See
http://www.arrl.org/field-day for more info on Field Day. Hams from all over
North America will be contacting each other while under simulated emergency
conditions. We will have several stations set up at our Field Day site at
Our Lady of the Hills Catholic high school. Even if you don't have a license
we can get you on the air so you can experience the fun of ham radio. We
always have great food and a lot of fun at Field Day and it is a good way to
see and use lots of different equipment and meet our members. Come to our
meeting this Thursday for more details.
By the way, I am one of the license instructors for the club - I usually put
on one or two license classes per year (I just had one in April) for
aspiring hams. Look for me at the club meeting and I will try to answer any
questions you might have about how to get your license. I will be wearing my
name badge with my call sign on it: K4DG. If you can't make it to the
meeting drop me an email or call me with your questions.
I look forward to meeting you and welcome to ham radio.

Hello all...
If you are coming to the N5P station at the Pacific War Museum in
Fredericksburg, there are
two ways that you can get to us!
1) Go to the ticket /info counter at the Bush Gallery (on Austin Street)
and they will show you the way...
OR
2) Look for us on the West side of the building next to Lincoln Street.
The N5P location has its own
outside door. Look for the telltale coax lines coming down from the roof!!
Freq info at N5P atQRZ.com

Hi, John,
In addition, if you are ever in Kerrville on Wednesday morning (8:00AM +/-
), stop by McDonalds (past WalMart on Junction Hwy for the coffee/ breakfast
get together. Men are in the kiddie playroom area, and wives are up front
just to the right of the door. You can hear all kinds of discussions and
information, ham radio and otherwise.
Harvey, K5HV
