The first thing to do is try to identify the type of noise and then its
source. Is it steady, or does it go on and off? Does it have a buzzing
sound? Or, is it a hissing sound? How does the noise behave when you turn
the noise balnker in your feceiver off and on?
If it is buzzy and steady, it is probably from power lines. If it goes on
and off, it can also be from power lines. I may be coming from something in
your house, or a neighbor's house. Plasma TVs are known to produce noise. I
hear that the mew LED lightbulbs do as well, but have no personal experience
with them.
If it is a hissing sound, it's likely your receiver noise. Disconnect the
antenna and see how much it goes down. If your receiver has a preamp, with a
switch to turn it off, turn it off and see what happens to the noise. Listen
to some fairly weak signals with the preamp on and off and see if the preamp
really gives you improved reception, or does it just make the signals AND
the noise louder?
If it is a buzzing sound and coming from the power lines, your only recourse
is to contact the power company and complain and keep complaining, until
something is done to correct it. You might want to cruise your neighborhood
with an AM radio tuned to a vacant channel and try to locate the source of
the noise. Tell the power company what you have found. There are a number of
more sophisticated ways of tracking down the source of power line noise, too
involved for me to go into, especially at 11:30 at night.
Do you have any switching type power supplies? They can also be a source of
noise.
Hams have been fighting noise since dawn of radio. It's a never ending
battle.
Good luck.
