[HCARC] LMR-400 and PL-259 fittings

I have found out that LMR-400 is the same diameter as RG-8 and both the Coax MFGR and the MFGR of my PL-259's indicate that the PL-259's fit just fine.  LMR-240 is the same size as RG-8X and fits the PL-259's with a reducer.

That said, if one wanted to use N connectors for waterproofness (is that a word??) how would one connect them to equipment like antenna switches and remote antenna tuners??  Would you use a fitting that changed the N to a PL-259 so it would connect to SO-239's (which are used on the back of almost all Ham equipment) or would you go into the piece of equipment and swap out the SO-239's for N connectors??
