[HCARC] Antenna Question

The Cushcraft R5 has 4 radials on the bottom of the antenna to act as
basically your "above ground radial system" or counter poise, since this
antenna is meant to be mounted at least 12 feet above actual ground. The
"capacitance hat" you mention has nothing to do with a counter poise. A
capacitance hat is a metal "hat" near the top of an antenna (in the case of this
antenna, it's 4 broad pieces of metal) which is used to extend the usable
bandwidth when operating on 40 or 80 meters which without this hat is only
about 10 khz wide on 80. With it, the bandwidth is about 30 khz. I have an R5
in my back yard. The good thing about it is that if properly tuned it
requires no tuner AND because of it's radiation angle it makes a fairly good
antenna for DXing if you don't have room for a beam. It is much better than
a 5BTV antenna and I've used this antenna for many years when I would
activate different light houses since it breaks down into easy to handle
sections. I was the first ham to activate the Montauk Point Lighthouse on Long
Island and assembled and mounted it near the top of the lighthouse along the
look out railing. The DX was fantastic. I have some great photos of this
and also did amateur TV from the top of the lighthouse so people who couldn't
make the climb could see what the view was like. There are other Cushcraft
verticals that I do not like and if you want to know why I'll answer at a
later date.

It's a Cushcraft R5 which is a half-wavelength antenna.
There are 4 base load radials which act as a top hat capacitance.

Subject: [HCARC] Antenna Question
Today at the Club station we were operating using the vertical antenna.
What does this antenna use for a ground?? Does it use radials on the roof
or at it's height are radials unneccessary??
