[HCARC] Antenna Question

It's a Cushcraft R5 which is a half-wavelength antenna.
There are 4 base load radials which act as a top hat capacitance.

Today at  the Club station we were operating using the vertical antenna.
What does this antenna use for a ground??  Does it use radials on the roof
or at it's height are radials unneccessary??
