[HCARC] Antenna Tuners a PS to my earlier.

sorry, another PS.. If you are choosing a tuner, remember that in today's
ham radio rooms there are computers. If you are using an old, "open" tuner
there is a chance that rf will be flowing throughout your shack and some
of this rf may "get into" your computer system usually through the keyboard
cable or even the keyboard itself. Although you may try to re-route wiring,
on specific bands and at power levels as low as 50 watts your transmitted
signal could create havoc with your logging program. This has happened to me
at several ham stations, one right in the middle of a contest! The
solutions are varied. Mainly, you want your tuner to be shielded with metal all
around it. If you purchase the MFJ 945 series tuner please be aware that the
sides of the tuner are plastic and not metal. You can either replace the
sides with metal or an easier route, which I have done many times, is to take
the side pieces off and then glue aluminum foil to the inner face of these
pieces with an over lap so when you re-install them the foil makes a good
contact with the rest of the metal case. (You can then trim any exposed
excess) This is another example of when you are considering the purchase of
a tuner you examine it closely for any potential problems. Also check the
chassis SO-239 connectors. MFJ has a habit of just pop-riveting them to the
case. If you use this method the pop-rivets may not make decent electrical
contact and open you up to a world of problems. Check them and it would
also be wise to drill one out and replace it with a screw and nut. I've found
several rivets that were loose. By the way, there usually is a grounding
lug on your tuner.... use it.

We are blessed with a whole bunch of club members who "KNOW THEIR STUFF"
and
with a forum where we can take advantage of the ability to ask and have
answered our questions about stuff.

I am blessed with people who help me manage my frustration by answering my
questions both in the complex (which I use for learning) and the more
simplistic which I use to keep me from royally screwing up in the
immediate
timeframe. Both are immensely valuble.
