Gary,

It is difficult to run a balanced line through a conduit. Generally you
should keep lossy material and conductors several times the spacing between
the lines away from the lines. The exception is shielded balanced lines.
There is a type of coax which has a balanced line ( two insulated wires)
inside a sheild. It kind of looks like coax except it has two conductors
inside the braided shield. I think its impedance is 100 or 150 Ohms. I bet
it is a real challenge to find. Its main application was undoubtedly for
balanced military antennas. You really shouldn't run ladder line or twin
lead through buried conduit. I suspect it won't work.

If I had good conduit runs, I wouldn't run spare cables. When the original
failed. I'd run a replacement when I pulled the first one out. If the first
one is damaged, I'd be willing to bet that any spares would also be damaged
whether it is because liquid got in the conduit or because something cut the
conduit.
