Gary,
Not at all. If anything my message is anyone can do this stuff. The
problem is that in our current environment, too many people seemed
overwhelmed and won't even try.
I appreciate non-engineers except for a few who I won't mention. My wife is
a retired RN. Between the two of us, we can handle just about any
eventuality. I take care of the hardware and she takes care of us. Neither
one of us could survive alone!
Yes, soldering copper pipe definitely counts. Old VHF guys will tell you of
their efforts in building high power amps using copper plumbing parts for
tuned circuits as well as using pipe and fittings for cavity filters. all
fun!
What did you do in the Navy? I spent my career with the AF, mostly as AF
civil service. I spent 20 years with the AF lab in Albuquerque, NM and
about 10 years at Kelly in San Antonio. Also spent a couple years each in
Dayton, OH, Cape Canaveral in FL, Ft. Meade, MD and Houston, TX. I had a
lot of fun. Now working part time at the Joint EW Center at Lackland with
mostly Navy EA6B and EP3 aircrew. The Navy guys ( and gals ) are a lot of
fun.
Kerry
