To All-
Jeff, N4YPT, and I have been working with N1MM and networking computers in preparation for Field Day Computerized Logging. We’ll need 5 computers in all, one stand alone for a VHF station, one stand alone for the GOTA station, and three networked for the CW, SSB and Digital-SSB-CW stations. My understanding is that we will operate “un-assisted” so we won’t need internet access. As a result, we’ve been focusing our attention on networking three stations independent of a router or switch. Two of the computers are running Windows 7 and the main computer, the club station computer, is running XP. Windows 7 has a neat networking function where one can easily form an Ad Hoc Computer-to-Computer network. The computer that forms the network becomes the wireless broadcasting host for the two other computers and one can choose to see the encryption code. Once set up, all the other computers need to do to connect to the wireless network is to supply the encryption code. This has been tried and tested this morning.
Due to an external antenna on the club computer I would prefer that it be the host but it’s not entirely necessary. This morning I was trying to figure out if there’s a way to form an Ad Hoc Computer-to-Computer network in XP and have the club computer be the host. I believe we have computer networking gurus in the club so I’m wondering if anyone can provide me with advice for setting up an Ad Hoc network in XP? I appreciate all the help I can get. If not, we’ll go with one of the laptops being the host.
This is the direction in which we are headed, if anyone feels strongly about another approach, we’re certainly open to suggestions.
