Gale,  two things come to mind.  First check out how valuble the knife might 
be to determine if ANY cleaning might destroy its "patina" and therefore 
destroy its value.  Kind of like refinsihing a valuable antique piece of 
furniture.  Might look better to you, but might have destroyed the value as 
an antique.

Second, take plenty of pictures if you are contemplating taking it apart in 
any way.
