Gary,
I use regular RG-8/U myself. It has a couple advantages, I'm used to
working with old style coax and I have no problem putting connectors on. At
VHF/UHF I might consider using new low loss coax. At 80, 40 and 30 m I
don't think it matters. I suspect others will have different opinions. You
should ask around and see if any of the guys in the club have experience
putting connectors on LM-400. I'm not sure how much you will save getting
coax through a friend. Again ask around. I'd probably try to get it from
one of the dealers at a hamfest.
If you are talking about bringing a computer LAN out to your shack, I think
coax is the wrong approach. There used to be an interface spec that used
half inch coax, RG-214/U I think. It was called 'thick net' to distinguish
it from the interface spec that used quarter inch coax, 'thin net', but both
are obsolete. Now it is mainly Cat 6 multi twisted pair. I think it goes
at least 100' but you need to check that. I use a wireless network at 2.4
GHz to cover the 100' or so from my router to my shack in another building.
