AC4CA is too kind with his praise, considering that I was running Assisted
(that means with packet cluster spotting). That kind of means like "shooting
fish in a barrel).
I did, however, find many of the 80 sections without cluster help, just
using normal S&P methods, including one of the more important sections -
North West Territories (Canadian Section) - as well as probably the most
important #80. In my case it was Western New York (WNY), which is typically
a very easy contact.
This is a real fun way of doing Sweepstakes (although requiring a lot of
patience). And it really helps you improve your listening skills. It's most
challenging, however, if it's done without use of the packet cluster, which
is really nerve racking, and usually requires as much time in the chair as
if you were doing a full out effort.
You can also learn how to "steal" contacts - meaning that if you hear a
section that you need, but who is being worked by a CQ'ing station, at the
end of their QSO, you can quickly ask the station you need to "move up" or
"move down" 2 or 3 khz, and then call them at the resulting frequency. I
think I had 3 or 4 of these during this contest, although I probably really
pissed off the station that was already at that frequency!
Anyway, tnx CA for your nice words!
