Since you presumably already have a HF radio, you might look for a used (out 
of production now) FT-736 which is basically a radio for satellite use.  It 
has 2M and 70CM built with dual VFO's and provisions for plug in modules for 
6M, etc.  It has a built in power supply, some of those go bad, but you can 
use an external 13V power supply just as well.  Look for one that has the 
tone board option installed for repeater use.

There's no 222mHz activity I know of around here.  On FM, San Antonio has 
one repeater and Austin has four.  Ask Bill Tynan about SSB.

Of course antennas are always the main sticking point.  Do you have some 
room in your attic for some halos or loop antennas?
