Anchorage Police Perform ARES Exercise.
Police officers with the Anchorage Police Department carried out an ARES exercise. This practice in readiness was conducted by the department’s hams. There are approximately 350 officers on the police department, of which, about 10% of them are licensed hams. The APD hams have their own station, KL7APD, located in the communications center. During the exercise that station was operated by a licensed APD dispatcher.

>On Thursday, October 27th, the group hosted a meeting in which ARES Anchorage District Manger Michael O’keefe, KL7MD, was guest speaker. Mr. O’keefe then oversaw the officers as they participated in a simulated earthquake disaster. This required the officers to travel to multiple locations within the city and report on the status of various infrastructure. During the exercise there was also a simulated failure on the 2m repeater. Officers then were required to switch to a backup 2m repeater to complete the exercise.

>The drill was completed successfully, and members gathered quite a bit of information. They were happy to volunteer their own time. And, they are eager to conduct another drill, possibly involving licensed citizens as ride-a-longs. The APD hams are proud to serve their community in a dual role as police officers and prepared amateur radio operators.

There might be some problems here - operating and being paid for it.
