At the other end of the spectrum, I'm highly in favor of high carb (that is, polycarbonate) coil forms. Polycarbonate is easy to work with regualr woodworking tools and does not crack like acrylic.

Subject: [HBR] Revised Low-carb links
Hello All,
I just discovered that the last internet link on my collection of low-carb
links goes to my purchase of a Hickok VTVM on Ebay---honest, I didn't mean
to gloat! If you would like a copy of the revised list of links, just email
me off or on the list and I'll send it along.
Cheers,
Brian Burns
