Hi,
Here's some information about another problem with home burned CD's. The
following is a copy on a letter informing a photographer friend of the
situation.

Hi Rachel,

I’ve enclosed an article for your information. It’s concerning the shelf
life of burned CD’s. Even though I have had some problems with music CD’s
I was unaware that home burned CD’s (and DVD’s) were not a permanent
storage medium. Naturally, I’m concerned that you might have unhappy
customers who, after a time, find that their pictures are no longer
retrievable.

Believe it or not, this information is difficult to come by. It all
started when Nancy heard at a Mac class that stick-on labels are a no-no.
Naturally, I was skeptical. Thus the investigation.

The plot even gets thicker. There are different grades of CD’s. I was
under the impression that the only difference would be in the degree of
quality control. Not so. It seems that there are various materials used
as the receptor for the burning process and some are more permanent than
others.

I guess Rachel, the bottom line is to be aware of the limitations of the
process and (if necessary) have a back-up system.
