Recently, at a hamfest, I purchased a home-brew Wadley Loop receiver, built 
by a fellow (here in Colorado).  With 4 tubes, it's astoundingly sensitive, 
STABLE, and relatively selective.  Considering that some of the RACAL 
high-end receivers (and the National HRO-500) used this scheme, it's pretty 
well proven.  As a friend once put it "The Ancients weren't stupid - they 
were just ancient!"
