[HBR] Need advice on Miller 1730 transformers

I use to restore antique radios and I had that same problem.
The slugs will get set and when you try to turn them they will crack and
then
when you try to turn them they expand and won't turn. I use to take a small
drill bit and drill out the slug a little at a time. Keep enlarging the
drill bit
until the slug falls apart and then you can shake the parts out or pick
them out..
I DIDN'T use a drill. I only use the bit by hand. If you us a drill, the
power will
cause the bit to grab the slug and will twist the coil and brake it loose
and the leads.
You use to could buy a package of different sized slugs at the radio parts
store, but they have all gone by the way side now. Find some other IF cans
and rob the slug out of them. Remember that brass slugs up the frequency
as you tune them into the coil and that iron slugs lower the frequency
as you turn them into the slug. If the slug isn't cracked you can heat the
IF
can with a hair drier and something's that will loosen the slug and it will
turn.
Once the slug cracks, it over with it turning. If you find out that the new
slug it loose in the old threads, take a small rubber band and
put one strand of it in the hole before you start the slug in the can.
Hope this helps.
