Stop stalling, and start building, build a BFO circuit first,

after you master that , grab a Byers chassis and start drilling
holes, keep it simple, put the power supply on a separate chassis
etc., if you are nervous about drilling the holes, then order two
chassis top plates for the Byers chassis, if you screw the first one
up then you have a second to fall back on, Be prepared to make
mistakes, don't waste time looking for templates, lay your parts out
on the top, mark it with masking tape and press on, if you drill the
wrong hole, cover it with a small piece of aluminum and press on.

Then build the audio section and then start on the rest of the project
working from the audio section backwards. Don't spend years looking
for a perfect dial and reduction mechanism, just slap on a temporary
dial and get on with it or just leave the variable installed, with the
shaft sticking out and install a crude dial and pointer and play,
find the ultimate dial later. Can't find a 3 stage variable then use
a two gang variable for the osc and mixer and a separate cap for the
RF. Maybe you will find a better capacitor later, so what if you have
to change a few turns on the coils, you can rewind a coil in 30
minutes.
Don't wait until you have collected every single part of the
project, otherwise you will never get started.
You are not building a project that has to be perfect, its just an
HBR a "Home Brew Receiver".
