[HBR] Uni Bit pricing : )

I long ago gave up on the Chinese products. If you only drill a few
holes in your lifetime, fine. If you need more, then you learn to
sharpen the bit cutting edge quite frequently, and the difference
between true high speed steel and some of the Asian competition can be
enormous. Taiwan and Japanese products are outstanding. It's the
mainland stuff that is highly variable.
The enemy of the cutting edge is too much velocity for the particular
material involved, and with the larger Unibits it can be a bit more
critical, particularly if you are using a variable speed hand drill.
They tend to go way over the speed that you intend for just a second or
two...more than enough to fry the edge of the tool. There are carefully
and long established feed and speed rates for cutting tools and
materials, but you can't follow them very well unless you have a milling
machine or drill press where you can control some of the variables. A
decent coolant (some folks call it a lubricant, but that is not
technically precise) is useful if you have more than a single hole to
drill...WD-40 is excellent for aluminum (about the only thing it's good
for, from my experience...:-) )
