Hi Chris,
I have gone to building/using/re-using separate power supplies (and
audio amps). It keeps some of the heat out of the radio. A potential
source of hum is removed from the radio at the far end of the power
cable under the bench. The expense and effort of producing a power
supply for each and every unit is eliminated.
My power supplies are also overbuilt by intent. The one I built for
operating a single 6146 transmitter can easily run more than two. In
fact, it melted down a 6146 with no sign of strain at all when the bias
supply wire broke. Don't spend too much time worrying about your
"overkill" power supply being outside your receiver.
