I did something similar with an HR-10B that I traded for specifically
for this project (had no case, etc). My approach was a double
conversion RX with 455kHz second IF and a crystal filter. The
IFTs were a standard size which made changing the whole IF
strip to 455kHz relatively easy.
Added a small stage built around subminiature tubes for the
first conversion/xtal oscillator. This went underneath the chassis
for some reason I don't recall. Added a dual gang preselector
capacitor.
I had in mind a multiband conversion but only did 1 band, I don't
recall which. Was also going to rework the product detector but
I didn't get around to that.
Since the modified RX has been in the garage for the past few
years, I deduce that I wasn't particularly pleased with the results.
But I don't recall the details (and the chassis plus my notes are
a few hundred miles away).
It is certainly a good starting point for all sorts of RX projects
and is very easy to work on.
