The scheme that Pullen used was to have devices with dissimilar gm. You
can achieve that with triodes just by selecting the operating point. Even
with similar dual triodes this is easy to do, for example by operating one
triode at much lower plate voltage than the other.

The original Pullen paper can be found by searching (sorry, not at home
so I don't have it to hand). He takes you through the calculations that give
good performance without exceeding the tubes' allowed power dissipation.
