Hello-
Just some notes of mine on HBR IF's and components:
1. For the low freq IF's, and a BFO coil. the 85 KC IF's from the
190-500 KC ARC-5 receiver (BC-453) are hard to beat. These are some of the
highest quality IF's made, plus they have adjustable coupling. There
is a lot of documentation on these and they are readily available and
inexpensive. The IF's from the R-11A are the nicest 85 KC ones around
(silver plated capacitors), however the R-11A does not have the matching 85 KC
BFO coil like the BC-453 unit does. A scanned copy of the Ham Radio Mag article
(from the ARC-5 site, link from Glowbugs site) concerning all of the ARC-5 IF's
and coils is immensely useful.
2. For the 1600 KC IF's use the 1410 KC IF's from the 1.5 -3.0 MC ARC-5.
These are easily modified to raise the frequency.
3. I have not pursued aquiring carbon composition resistors exclusively.
They are good to have for certain applicvations but I find their values have
shifted upwards in a lot of cases, but I realize they can be baked and the
moisture driven out. The audio folks have driven their price up terribly.
4. Check with Unadilla, who aquired James Millen parts, he still had
some of the James Millen IF transformers. There were some nice 1600 KC ones last
time I checked, not sure of other frequencies but did have 5.0 MC, 455 KC and 50
KC at one time, plus some BFO coils.
