I really think Ted was progressive enough to recognize the value (and
necessity in my opinion)of crystal controlled oscillators and crystal
lattice filters. I think he would have used the building block approach,
similar to the HBR-11 concept. Build a good tunable IF with a decent
filter and then build a converter for the ham bands. He might have taken
advantage of the easy to find and inexpensive Heathkit filters and
crystals. I think he would have made good use of sheet beam tubes that
are still inexpensive-maybe the 6JH8. In spite of their potential
advantages, I think he may have avoided the really hot tubes because of
the difficulties the builders might have trying to tame them down. Would
he have used plug in coils? Hard to say. It would depend on whether
simplicity, or convenience of use was foremost in his mind. A decent
dial might have been one of his tougher challenges. I think he might
have come up with something using a couple of ball drives joined together.
