Although not related to design change, one of the reasons that I like tube 
stuff is the ability to solder to terminals and lugs that I can actually see 
with these 69 year old eyes.  The components are discrete items and allows 
us to change components as we want.  No concern for static discharges or 
overheating a tiny solid state device.  And tubes keep us warm in the winter.  
:-)
 
I really like Walt's perspective which is the most realistic of the 
possibilities.  The top of the list of changes that Ted would have made is the idea 
of a single conversion using a crystal filter if they had been available at 
a reasonable price.
