I would think that with a good-quality inductor, air-variable capacitors, a
regulated supply,
and perhaps playing around with small compensating caps, a LC oscillator at
1650 or 1685 kc
would be stable enough. After all, this is the sort of frequency that most
tube VFOs are based at
before multiplication.
