Those Eddystone dials aren't rare, they show up on the watery auction place
and at hamfests regularly. Ebay has one now, item 32053402731.

They may seem expensive, but remember they cost $21.50 new back in the
late 1960s. The dial is just the beginning, however; to get the most out of a
classic HBR you need a good tuning capacitor and the special shaft coupler
(Millen 39016).

The bandspread/bandset idea can work but it involves a major redesign of
the receiver front end, mechanically and electrically. The bandset variable
condenser will have to be a very small one, too.

One alternative solution is to use the capacitor/dial drive from a 6-9 Mc.
ARC-5 (BC-455). It's a three-section high quality capacitor with built-in
gear-reduction drive that's about 50 turns stop to stop. 62 uuf per section.
Using one means a mechanical redesign of the front end of the HBR, but so
does the bandset/bandspread idea.

I put a smilie face after my want, because I'm fairly sure there are not
too many of these guys running around at the moment. But I would settle for
a good second best, 8:1 is about the best I have right now, and 55:1 is
probably only to dream about. I've been playing with an idea of a band
setting cap, then the 8:1 might be OK, if I am only aiming at a smaller
portion of the band. Anyone play with that idea for the HBR XX series???
