The 1959 ARRL Handbook has "A Selective I.F. Amplifier for Phone and C.W."
on pp138-142.

A self contained, single chassis receiver is appealing. 

I have not done it with tubes but I think the idea of modular construction
is a also a good idea. Ian's idea is a very good one. 

I build modular with solid state and makes it convenient to modify and
experiment.
