Well, I know it's a Halliscratcher site, but personally

New hams always get talked into the latest & greatest..

Go find yourself a Kenwood TS-520S, 530S, or 820S.  they have solid-state 
everything EXCEPT for final tubes which are either those great Toshiba 
2000's or regular 6146B's... either way, with tube finals YOU DON'T NEED A 
STINKING TUNER - see, with a pi-network output --- IT'S ALREADY THERE!

$200-$275 will get you a great radio that does it all, and nice receiver 
that has wonderful audio - now, put up a GAP vertical or dipole, and you'll 
be very happy, with very few Lincolns and Grants flowing out of your pocket.
