OUCH! For us folks with dial-up speed connections (nominally high
speed, but ...) lists that allow pictures are a modest curse.
The trouble is, if pictures are allowed, then people send them. In
order to limit the time it takes to download mail (I get 200-up
messages/day) I limit file size to 60k or so, meaning that the posts
with pictures simply disappear.
Of course, Yahoo Groups can be set up to disallow pictures. Pictures,
HTML, and attachments are all one switch to Yahoo.
I realize that in the 21st Century we should all make full use of
broadband capability, but I have last century's hardware, software,
and (not unrelated) rather less than last century's income.
It is also true that lists allowing the fancy stuff are somewhat more
vulnerable to viruses and such, although Yahoo does an excellent job
of taking out most of them.
I like pictures, diagrams and the like (have been to the HBR archives
several times) but they need to be out-of-line, for visiting when time
permits.
